Program Director Mike Lee who oversees the Ascend project at the Business Transformation Office, attended the recent Leadership Forum and submitted a question inspired by Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Emily Carter's remarks about data-driven planning about student success.
What is the formula for student success, and how can Administration help to solve the equation?
One need not look further than our mission statement to see what role Administration has in ensuring student success—“to deliver quality customer-oriented services and programs that provide the strong foundation for UCLA to excel in education, research, and public service.” Whether it is the buildings and grounds where students live and learn, the bus they ride to campus, the technology they interface with, the events they attend, or keeping them safe on campus and in their labs, Administration is there behind the scenes facilitating their learning and living environment.
Administration is also directly involved in the teaching and learning of our PreK-12 students and the important role of providing continuing education and training to the thousands of employees within administration and across the campus who directly and indirectly support the success of students. This is to say that we not only support student success, but the success of those that provide the direct teaching and learning. All of these efforts provide the foundation that enables student success.
As we look to the future, Administration must lead the effort of continuously looking at how we can improve our services to the campus community. Every dollar we can save is one more dollar that can be freed up to support other important teaching and research efforts across the campus. The campus needs far exceed the available resources so it is important that Administration lead the way on how we and the campus can streamline our processes to free up financial and human resources, while enhancing our service to the campus.
